I guess, what one wants to see and what your viz is all about is which countries have the largest/lowest casualties. Whether I can find quickly where exactly is, say, Canada, is not very relevant. Also, I think that by ranking countries according to the number of casualties, you would better show another pattern - which countries are on an ascending trend and which are on a descending trend in terms of casualties through your color schemes/square sizes.

I thought about that, but concluded that you probably want to find a specific country. But you're probably right! :)
