Life expectancy

It’s not the first time I create a data visualization about life expectancy and it won’t be the last.

Life expectancy describes how long a person can expect to live and it’s a great metric to describe the overall wellbeing of a country.

Today, I wanted to create a colourful map with bold text comparing the life expectancy of European countries to that of the United States.

Here’s what I got.

There’s a clear pattern — life expectancy decrease to the east.

Eastern Europe's economy suffered under Soviet rule and hasn't caught up to Western Europe since.

Countries with weaker economies usually have lower levels of education, higher smoking rates, and underfunded healthcare systems.

All of these factors contributing to lower life expectancy.
