I enjoy creating data visualizations about demographies.
There are clear trends that differ between countries, and it tells you a lot about the state of the world.
Population pyramids are the most common visualization, but they have a flaw.
They don’t show you how the demography change over time.
I wanted to create something better.
The idea
Population pyramids split the population by gender.
That’s visually appealing, but it doesn’t add much information since the gender ratio stays more or less constant, especially between countries.
That’s why I decided to replace the gender dimension with time.
Design
I also wanted to create something that stands out visually.
If done correctly, it should capture peoples attention and spark their curiosity.
Ideally, the chart should be like an artwork from a distance, but crystal-clear in what it shows up close.
That’s a difficult balance to strike, but it’s worth the effort.

I've never seen this data before like this. Thank you for putting it together! I think it will be a lot clearer if you use different colors for the different age cohorts though.
what is the baseline assumption for the evolution of the fertility rate?
